Reykjavík Golf Club

On the 14th of December, 1934, a few distinguished gentlemen gathered for a meeting in Reykjavik. The occasion was the establishment a golf club, the first one in Iceland. The club was originally called The Golf Club of Iceland but was later changed to Reykjavik Golf Club when other golf clubs where established in the country. The idea of establishing the golf club originally came from Icelandic students studying in Denmark, where they were introduced to the game. GRAFAR4 Building a golf course in Grafarholt proved to be a very difficult task. There was hardly any soil that was usable for cultivation or let alone building a golf course. Nevertheless, the members persevered and with great effort were able to build a beautiful and challenging golf course. Play on the course started in 1963 but only on a few holes. However, more and more holes were gradually added. Today, Grafarholt is a golf course that has received international recognition, practice facilities that are second to none as well as a club house of the highest quality. GRAFAR6 The Grafarholt golf course was designed the Swede, Nils Skold. There can no doubt that he did a fantastic job. The course is unique in that no two holes are alike. You can say that the course consists of 18 completely different holes, each with its own characteristic. This is quite unique and very exciting. Foreign golf reporters, who have played or visited the golf course, all say the same thing: “never have they seen such diversity on a golf course like there is in Grafarholt.” GRAFAR7 The course is very undulating and therefore quite heavy on the foot, especially from the back tees. The course is not the longest, measuring 6.030 meters (6650 yards) par 71 from the back tees, but requires great levels of accuracy if you want to play well. To illustrate that, the course record from the back tees is 67 or four under par. The course record from the members tees is 63. GRAFAR5 There has been a great increase in the number of golfers in Iceland in recent years. The sport´s popularity is always on the rise. At Reykjavik Golf Club in the mid 1990´s, the Grafarholt course could no longer handle great number of golfers playing there every day. GRAFAR3 To cope with that problem, the club decided to build a new 18 hole course at Korpulfsstadir in 1993. Reykjavík Golf Club is by far the largest golf club in Iceland with 2.500 members, it has two different but magnificent golf courses and it will not be long until the Korpa golf course will host international tournaments just like the Grafarholt course has done in the past. The biggest driving range in the country, Básar, is located in Grafarholt. Básar, which is a three story building, opened in 2004 and has over 70 mats to hit balls from. The club has two short practice courses, one at Korpa (Litli völlur) and one at Grafarholt (Grafarkot) where players can fine tune their short game. GRAFAR

Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club

Pestovo golf club is a world-class 18-hole course stretching 6,487 m (about 7,094 yards). It has been designed for top-level events, including major tournaments.

PESTOVO

The architects did their best to produce a challenging but fair course, one that could prove a tough nut to crack even for the best professional players. At the same time members will find it very exciting and attractive.

PESTOVO5

Each hole is unique, and this means that each round will bring the player a novel and unforgettable experience. Some holes are designed to feature wide fairways, deep sand traps and tough greens — these are sure to put the golfers through their paces. Others, with their narrow fairways, will call first of all for precision playing. In any case, it is important to have a game strategy: the golfer will have to take into account all the implications of a bad stroke.

PESTOVO6

Our magnificient course has been designed to take advantage of the terrain: open spaces are punctuated with woods to preserve a natural environmental balance. The course is laid out in a serpentine pattern: it starts in a forested area and then emerges into open spaces, which always feature lakes, such combination being its crowning glory.

PESTOVO4

The greens are fringed with trees and shrubs, which blend in perfectly with the dominant landscape. Moreover, we have engineered several mounds in open spaces to give extra character to each hole and provide favourable places for spectators. And the clubhouse terraces offer a magnificent panoramic view of the golf course with its woods and lakes.

The Royal County Down Golf Club – Northern Ireland

Royal County Down is located in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful links settings in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different vista from virtually every hole.

The narrowest ribbons of fairways thread their way through as impressive a set of sand dunes as could be imagined. The fairways are surrounded by purple heather and golden gorse, so beautiful to look at but so punishing for any who may stray from the prescribed path.

The ‘bearded’ bunkers are world famous and feature overhanging lips of marram, red fescue and heather. The greens are fast and many are domed, rejecting any shot lacking conviction. This is a true test of any player’s command of the traditional bump and run, the preferred way to play any links.

The ninth hole is one of the most photographed holes in world golf. A 486 yard par 4, it is played from one side of a huge mound down to a fairway some 60 ft below and 260 yards from the tee. From the bottom of the slope the second shot is played over two bunkers to a raised green.

The finest of all links courses, it offers a stern challenge from the championship tees. The record is 66 set by Ireland’s first golfing superstar, Jimmy Bruen, in 1939.

From the stableford tees it offers golfers of all standards the opportunity of playing a truly great course with dramatic panorama of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

Works beautifully. I had tried other rangefinders and had trouble holding still enough to zoom in on target; with this it is a breeze. Totally pleased.

Domaine Impérial Golf Club – Switzerland

Domaine Impérial Golf Club

The Club was officially opened in May 1988 with a long drive hit by Severiano Ballesteros. It was soon to gain an excellent reputation in Swiss golfing circles. Our splendid location on banks of Lac Léman, midway between Lausanne and Geneva, the majestic natural surroundings and top quality facilities are some of the reasons for the very complimentary reviews that the Club and its magnificent course have received.

However, despite the lasting imprint left by the Napoleon family, it is unlikely that the Domaine Impérial would have created such intense interest had it not been for Pete Dye’ s outstanding course design. On the short-short list of the world’ s best golf course architects, this great designer knew just how to work with a terrain that lent itself splendidly to a major 18-hole course. He created the course in compliance with the many requirements and regulations imposed to meet ecological and environmental concerns.

A challenging course

This is the first time I have had the opportunity, in this part of the world, to create such a unique course,” said Pete Dye, certainly one of the three best golf course designers in the world today.

At the Domaine Impérial he was able to indulge his fantasy, while respecting the natural features and varied profile of the terrain and always bearing in mind the basic philosophy of the Scottish courses.
He is known as a someone who has moments of genius and moments of madness, but with his feet firmly on the ground. “When I design a hole, I try to make par the test it should be of a golfer’s skill. There is nothing more stimulating for me than to observe a player following his ball attentively to see where it has actually gone. At St. Andrews, not only can you not see the greens, you can’t see the hazards either. After a while you get a certain vision of a course: that’s the case here.

“Moreover, I believe that the best golf holes are pars 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5. Players should be able to imagine scoring a birdie because the hole is short. The best are never unhappy at scoring a bogey with an approach shot with a 2 iron. On the other hand, if they score with a short wedge, they are in for a surprise on the next hole.

At the Domaine Impérial, I think I found the right mix between these different concepts, while making the course more difficult than it appears.

Jack’s Point Golf

Jack’s Point is a 1,200 hectare (3,000) acre settlement in one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.  It combines a sustainable design approach positioned with contemporary architecture and is just 15 minutes drive from Queenstown.

With a backdrop of 2300 vertical metres of the razorback Remarkables mountain range and an armchair view of an outstanding lake and mountain panorama, Jack’s Point Golf Course is not only one of the most spectacular in the world, but as an 18 hole par 72 championship course it offers golfers of any calibre a challenging and unforgettable experience.

The course works with nature, not against it. Designed with minimal excavation, the course measures 6388 metres (6906 yards) from the championship tees and is built on the most spectacular of Jack’s Point terrain, weaving through tussock grasslands, dramatic rock outcrops, steep bluffs and swathes of native bush to the edge of Lake Wakatipu.

The Clubhouse, situated on the edge of Lake Tewa, is the centre of the Jack’s Point community. The essential amenities of the golf shop, restaurant, bar and deli are all contained within this simple yet elegant building. The Jack’s Point Clubhouse draws on local, high country architectural references – from farm buildings simple in design and function.

The historic trusses (over 100 years old), sourced from Southland sale yards, have directly influenced the form and proportion of the building.  These trusses are an integral design feature, evident both inside and outside the building. The rawness of the materials used in constructing the Clubhouse reflects the rugged environment in which it sits.

World Woods Golf Club

Two top 100 Golf Courses in one place! – 36 holes- Tom Fazio’s Pine Barrens and Rolling Oaks Golf Courses along with the Number 1 ranked Golf Practice Facility and Driving Range. “This is my best work,” said Fazio in a conversation with Joe Black, past President of the PGA of America, who has had the opportunity to play many of the best golf courses worldwide. Mr. Black stated, “This is like having Pine Valley and Augusta, plus the best practice facility in the world – in the same location.” Clearly a “must play” and “must see to believe” golf facility.

The Pine Barrens Course at World Woods, is ranked #26 by Golf Week ” Americas Best Modern Course”. Pine Barrens is a visually stunning blend of native terrain and golf course design.

Named for the many pine trees that line its length, the acclaimed layout is sculpted from an expansive pine forest with surprising and dramatic changes in elevation.

The large manicured fairways framed by expansive untamed waste bunkering create a unique golf experience. The course’s style has been compared to that of Pine Valley in New Jersey – the consensus No. 1 course in the world. Pine Barrens offers many intimidating, yet, enjoyable holes.

The golfer who challenges Pine Barrens will find the course to test both the physical and mental aspects of the game.

The Rolling Oaks Course provides the second world-class layout at World Woods. An entirely different, yet no less enjoyable experience than playing Pine Barrens, this course’s name also gives clue to its design.

Despite being built directly adjacent to the Pine Barrens Course, differences in soil content allow the land to support giant Oak trees draped with Spanish moss that regularly accent the holes. Sharply defined bunkers filled with bleached white sand contrast beautifully with the rich green fairways. These attributes coupled with the many Azalea bushes present in the landscaping are reminiscent of the famed Augusta National.

The beautiful rolling fairways that lead to undulating greens add drama to this more traditional course design. Many changes in hole style and length create a great blend of holes that requires a variety of shots and a strategic approach to score well.

Oceanico Faldo Course – Portugal

Amendoeira Golf Resort is just 35 minutes drive from Faro Airport along the A22 motorway, 4 km inland from the beach resort of Armação de Pêra.

Designed by Sir Nick Faldo with strategic play in mind this 6598m par 72 championship course demands careful positioning to score well.

“The land at Amendoeira is dramatic and the project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve. With so many courses in the region, that’s no mean feat,” pointed out Nick Faldo, during his visit in 2007.

In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale’s heather, spartan Holm oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire’s sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play.

Nick said: “This was a very exciting project, which gave me a great opportunity to exploit my passion for design the same way I exploited my passion for playing. You have incredible views, beautiful undulating land and any time you have natural terrain like this, it is great fun to work with.”

The real skill is that when you stand on the tee, the golf hole tells you what to do and if you do what it tells you there is reward but if you don’t you’re penalised. The back nine is quite hilly, which is fantastic because we’ve got some great views to complement the course.”

“I like my courses to be challenging to whoever plays them. There might be easy holes in some places, but they are a challenge because you have to think about them, and that is what I am after. The best compliment you can get in the design business is when players come off the course and say ’wow, that was a challenge,’ and that’s just what I planned at Amendoeira Golf Resort.”

Burnham & Berrow Golf Club – England

Burnham & Berrow Golf Club

Founded in 1890 and venue for over 100 years of British and International Amateur Championships, from the British Ladies in 1906 to the English Amateur in 2006 and the Brabazon in 2011.

The original course was formed as a nine hole course in 1890 on a strip of land called the Warren between the town of Burnham and the village of Berrow.

The development of this course to the championship course it is today continued over the next 30 years with many of the leading course designers of the period having an input into the course architecture. Herbert Fowler and Hugh Alison were members of Burnham and both had an important part to play in improving the links. So, to a lesser extent, did Harold Hilton and Dr Alistair Mackenzie; but the shape of today’s course is due mainly to Harry Colt.

The course is laid out in the traditional manner of nine holes out and nine back. The first nine skirt the sand dunes and coastline northwards, turning inland and southwards and then following the coast road through Berrow, past the Church and back into Burnham.

As with all links golf the challenging factor is the wind and its unpredictability, which means that the course can play differently almost every day. The greens are renowned as true and quick and the course is guaranteed to be in good condition all year. Excellent drainage due to the sandy subsoil ensures that the course is rarely if ever closed. The course demands that you use almost every club in the bag and the experience is memorable and always a challenge. This is why Burnham & Berrow is chosen so frequently as host for many championship tournaments.

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course

Stanley Thompson, Canada’s master golf course architect, displayed his finest work with his design of The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course in Alberta. It’s hard to imagine a golf course that hugs snow-capped mountains, meanders past glacial-fed lakes and through a wildlife corridor featuring elk, caribou, bears and wolves…but that’s exactly what golf at Western Canada’s number one Resort Mountain resort course has to offer.

Thompson had the vision and led the team that conceived of and constructed a world-class golf course in the heart of a Unesco World Heritage Site over 80 years ago. Thompson carved fairways from the surrounding forests, giving top priority to the natural contours of the Rocky Mountains. As a result, the par 71 course features elevated tee boxes, dramatic bunkers and vistas that scan the surrounding mountain peaks.

A stunning natural setting, combined with unparalleled bunkering, makes The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club in Alberta a “must play” course which offers several services and amenities.
